There is always so much hype over the clothes worn and people that attend, the Movies themselves get less press! That is what got us to start our Academy Awards: and the Oscar went to... all day bash many years ago.
What is the Academy Awards, and the Oscar went to... all day bash? Well, basically it is an all day Oscar winning movie marathon with a lot of food, fun and drinks thrown in. Now in college, there was a lot more drinks involved than after we started having kids and it morphed into a family event! It really is a lot of fun for everyone.
Here’s a quick rundown on our Academy Awards, and the Oscar went to all day bash -
We pick a selection of past Academy Award winning movies to show (we started with just best picture but now include ones with best actor (etc.) to extend the list. Since it is a group of 9 families, there is always feedback on what to show the next year LOL
We eat pot luck munchies non-stop such as Sub sandwiches, crab dip (kept warm in small crock pots), pizza, fruit and veggie plates, sushi, brownies etc. so we can keep the movies running. Each family brings 3 food items and drinks - all of which is shared buffet style.
We print out ballots with all of the categories and everyone fills their out and puts it into the basket along with $5 (older kids can play too but everyone that does, must add $5 to the pot) and the winner takes all. Since we are on the West Coast, we know the winners before the Academy Awards is broadcasted usually just watch our movies - we have one of the kids announce each winner as they are reported on the Internet.
We also set up a kid’s movie marathon in the playroom with the popcorn machine and cooler with box juices - they also eat off the buffet. We have games and activities for them and even a long outdoor scavenger hunt (supervised) with rules such as hop to the playhouse to add in some extra activity.
Academy Awards: and the Oscar went to... all day bash tips:
• It helps to have a large screen TV with surround-sound when watching a lot of movies, but any TV would work.
• Hire teens to help out with the kids (older siblings are great) to make sure the kids are having fun, play the games in between the movies, direct a bored kid to a quiet activity (coloring, crafts etc) until the movie ends and take them all outside in-between each movie. Every family chips in to pay the teens.
• Access to continuous munchies works out better than trying to have a “dinner” as it cuts down on preparation, serving and clean-up time. Also it allows everyone to eat when, and what, they want.
• Be flexible on times with a specific starting time for the first couple of movies. We start at 10 am but if a family has soccer, church or something else at that time, they will arrive in time for the second movie.
• Sandwich sad, serious dramas in-between more light hearted ones. Make the last movie one without any violence as little ones may be ready to snuggle on their parent’s laps by then.
