John Mayer has announced a winter tour to support new release Battle Studies, which is due out Nov. 17 on Columbia Records. The tour will start Feb. 8 in Charleston, SC, and conclude Apr. 10 in Chicago (see complete itinerary below). Reggae rockers Michael Franti & Spearhead will provide support.
Battle Studies will be Mayer's fourth solo studio release, and first since the multi-platinum Continuum in 2006. His 2001 debut, Room for Squares, has sold more than 4.0 million copies in America, while 2003 follow-up Heavier Things and Continuum have sold more than 2.0 million copies each.
Mayer has described the new album as a "confessional, relaxed and liberated album" that draws upon "the warmth, melodies and simplicity of '70s and '80s California rock/pop.Where Continuum was R&B and Soul, Battle Studies was written with the timelessness of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young in mind. The melodies and message are concise and from-the-gut with the efficiency of simplicity."
Battles Studies was co-produced by Mayer and Steve Jordan. Mayer, Jordan and Pino Palladino are the John Mayer Trio, and will be performing two shows to close 2009, Dec. 29 at Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego, CA, and Dec. 31 at The Joint, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Mayer will host a solo show in New York City on the day of the album's release. The show, titled John Mayer Live at the Beacon Theater, will air live in HD on Fuse. The network will also broadcast a one-on-one interview and half-hour video specials throughout November.
On Nov. 19, John will perform the debut single from Battle Studies, "Who Says" (watch video below), on the Today Show, and later in the day will sit-in with Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra before performing as The Late Show with David Letterman musical guest. After the taping, he will host a post-show concert which will stream live on Letterman's website and remain online through the beginning of the Battle Studies Tour.
