A man who shot at repossession company workers pled guilty, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail.
In January, Palatine, IL based Professional Recovery Services went to repossess vehicles from the 1900 block of Brighton Lane, in Hoffman Estates, because the owner was behind on payments for an Isuzu SUV and a Cadillac. A team of three Professional Recovery Services employees went to repossess the vehicles, but found only the Isuzu SUV, and hitched it to their tow truck. An employee went to door of the house to notify the owner of the repossession, but no one answered. Moments later, a man came out of the house, and slipped on the ice. When the employee asked the man if he was OK, the man pointed a handgun at the employee and ordered him to unhitch the Isuzu SUV. The employee acted as though he was going to comply, but instead jumped into the tow truck and escaped. The armed man, Ronnie Kindred, fired 5 or 6 shots at the fleeing tow truck, but the employee was unharmed.
Today, 42 year old Ronnie Kindred pled guilty to felony aggravated discharge of a firearm, which is a felony, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail by Judge Thomas Fecarotta Jr. in the Rolling Meadows branch of Circuit Court.
As a law student who graduates in a month, and just as a member of society in general, I must say that I'm disappointed with the light sentence in this case. Here we have a man who didn't pay his bills on time, and instead of taking responsibility for trying to live beyond his means, opened fire on innocent employees who were just doing their lawful job. These employees could have been killed or seriously injured by Kindred's actions, and he received less jail time than some people get for file sharing. This strikes me as unjust, for society as a whole as well as the repo employees whose lives were in danger. Light sentences like this put violent offenders back on the street, where they can harm future victims.
