To the shock of gun owners, talk show host Russ Limbaugh has become a spokesman for the Humane Society of of the United States (HSUS). They accuse him of abandoning them for an organization focused on opposing hunting, fishing, and trapping.
The HSUS is considered a foe of groups supportive of gun rights which is said to have a secret agenda to end all hunting in the U.S. Millions of hunters and sportsmen that are represented by organizations such as Ducks Unlimited and the U.S. Sports Alliance have prevailed up Limbaugh to end the public-service radio spots which include cracking down on dogfighting and other animal cruelty crimes.
Supporting an organization such as HSUS is out of character for Limbaugh, who usually concentrates on politics. Just the fact that he made the recording for the organization became a red flag for gun owner organizations. It is considered a part of an anti-sportsman agenda.
HSUS maintains that gun owners misunderstand of the work of the organization. It is a national lobbyist group and is not affiliated with local humane societies, animal shelters or animal care and control agencies.
Limbaugh is not the only talk shows host who has shown support for an animal rights organization. Recently, Fox News commendator Bill O'Reilly applied some of the profits from the merchandise sales he touts, which he donates to such causes as the Wounded Warrior Project, to the Humane Society.
Limbaugh is not known for backing down under pressure from any organized group so it will be interesting to watch how he will react to the organized pressure from hunters and sportmen.
