As the smell of Chicago style politics settles over the White House, Republican Commerce Secretary Gregg decides to bail out before he is tainted with it.  His reasons are said to be centered around strong-armed Chief of Staff Emanuel trying to control the next census and Gregg's refusal to support the  passage of the stimulus package.

In a statement released to the media, Gregg said, "...it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me.  Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and ofther potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns.  We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy."

It should have come as no surprise to Gregg that Emanuel would begin using the tactics learned under the guidance of the Daley Machine in Chicago in the White House. Apparently, that is the reason Obama chose him as Chief of Staff. The media did a great covering  up about the relationship between Emanuel, Daley and Obama.

What is a surprise is that the power play by Emanuel to control the Census (and manipulate it) is that it got out so early in the game. Gregg got out before the long finger of the Illinois corruption started pointing at him.
