Ironman buys 5430 Sports in Boulder, Colorado

The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), the company that owns the Ironman and 70.3 series of races, has purchased 5430 Sports in Boulder, Colorado according to sources close to the transaction.

The sale includes the entire Boulder Triathlon Series which consists of the Sprint, Peak, and 5430 Long Course Triathlons.

Barry Siff, the Race Director and founder of 5430 Sports, will stay involved in a publicity role with the current races, but plans to devote his time to running for the Boulder, Colorado City Council, according to informed sources.

The financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed.

The World Triathlon Corporation manages and runs the Ironman and 70.3 series of races. The WTC was itself purchased last year by a private equality fund, and has since been rapidly expanding.

The WTC recently purchased North American Sports which included the sale of all of the Ironman races in North America except for Ironman Canada.

Questions that remain unanswered include; will the 5430 Long Course Triathlon, which is currently a half Iron distance race,  now be a branded under the Ironman 70.3 race series banner, and what will happen to the Peak and Short Course triathlons?

If the 5430 Long Course triathlon is re-branded as an 70.3 race it would be the first Ironman race in Colorado. The purchase of the Peak Triathlon and Short Course triathlons could also represent a significant shift toward the shorter (Olympic Distance) race formats for the WTC and the Ironman brand. It could potentially signify a new era of competition for the short course race market in the U.S. and perhaps the world.

We have contacted the WTC, and we'll post an official statement or press release as soon as we hear back from the Florida based company.
