When the economy keeps some major auto manufactures
from the Detroit Auto Show, the economy is bringing it!
What manufactures will be no shows? Nissan, Mitsubishi,
Rolls-Royce, Land Rover, Ferrari, and Suzuki. Also
downshifting is Porsche (one of the most profitable auto
manufactures) who did not attend the 2008 show and will
not be seen at this year’s show!
The show will still have many interesting rides, but it is
a clear signal that it is not “business as usual.” The auto
manufactures are really considering where their dollars are
going. Obviously, they do not want to get anywhere near
the dollar short and late predicament of the big three. At
this point, flat out survival is the name of the game. Even
sales for Toyota/Lexus, the prominent player in
the market, has seen its sales drop by over 20 percent.
What does all of this mean? Well, the manufactures
do not want to be associated in any way with the woes of
Detroit. However, it seems to indicates maximum innovation
and consumer value for each dollar that manufactures spend.
For example, two years ago the Nissan Versa had a base price
of about $13,000. Now, a base Versa sedan is available for
just under $10,000. Nissan and the others have no money
to spend that does not do something for the bottom line! If
this is where the consumer is at, the auto manufactures are
going the same way fast!
The Detroit Auto Show will be exciting, and I will be reporting
about the standout offerings. However, make no mistake, the
top minds at the top auto manufactures are thinking long and
hard about their economic future!
The consumer is king and the manufacturers are starting to
realize it again! Yes, as always, the Detroit Auto Show will
have some glitz. But rather than just glitz, I will keep bringing
it to you straight!
