President Obama stunned, irked and left many Twitter users feeling betrayed after he admitted to a group of Chinese students in Shanghai, that he never used Twitter. The chatter over the betrayal increased rapidly and ended up on the trending topics list. Trending topics fall off Twitter in moments but some topics have lasted for weeks. It's hard to say how long Twitter will be shocked by the confession.
According to Breaking News Online (BNO) the US President was holding a meeting with Chinese students that was streamed live to the White House's Facebook page. One of the students asked Obama, "Do you know about the great firewall and should we be able to use Twitter?" Obama answered, "I have never used Twitter but I'm an advocate of technology and not restricting internet access."
The rub is that President Obama's account has a "verified" seal on it's page and has over two and a half million followers. The Twitter website does say that Twitter verifies the person or someone the person allows to tweet on their behalf on verified account.
Many of Obama's followers believed that he tweeted on occasion and some believed it was his personal business account. Thus, the disappointment felt by Twitter users. Others were angry and believed that there should be a note on the account stating that all tweets are from his staff.
