If you're a fan of horror films, you may know of Jon Mack as being in Saw VI, which opened recently, the latest in the Saw series--the most popular franchise in the history of horror films. But Jon's Saw VI role, in which she plays a heroin addict named Jane, belies her real lifestyle, because the multi-talented Jon (who has also done graphic design and performs music) is a devotee of raw foods and all things spiritual.
Jon (a childhood nickname for Jeanne Marie) grew up on an organic farm near Detroit, MI, where she helped pick vegetables and fruit, milked cows and looked after the chickens. "I didn't know how lucky I was," she told me in a recent phone conversation.
What sparked her interest in raw food?
"I absolutely love raw food. I got turned onto it through Juliano's Raw [a Los Angeles raw restaurant]. My friend was working for him. I was already a vegan and eating pretty clean. His restaurant sold me; everything is delicious and so full of life, you feel better than caffeine or anything. The food tastes so bright and vibrant!" she said.
"The way I felt after I ate it it changed my whole perspective. As a kid, I remember picking something off the vine or tree; there's just nothing like it. I guess I was poised to eat raw from the way I was raised. I became addicted. I love the way you feel and how the food tastes!"
Jon wishes there were more raw restaurants around the country when she travels to work on films. When asked if she has trouble finding anything to eat while working on films, she said the Saw VI set's craft service table had a few things, like trail mix and fresh veggies. "I am better now at picking out things that are a healthier choice."
Does she have any favorite raw dishes? "Arielle [at Juliano's] makes an amazing salad--it's got kelp and avocado, nuts and seeds. Also the zucchini pasta, and they do these great reductions with it," she said. Jon also loves the raw wraps at the restaurant Leaf, near where she lives.
She's a fan of eating locally. "I completely fell in love with Cru, in Silver Lake, near me," she says. "This restaurant is wonderful. Everything they sell they grow in their own garden." She likes that Cru is half vegan and half raw, because she can bring people there who think raw food will be boring, and get them to try the food. "They make these amazing dishes there. They have a Mediterranean plate, figs and avocado, and they have hummus and serve it with flax seed crackers. And they have raw pasta.
"I want to encourage people to try it with an open mind, and often they'll be pleasantly surprised," Jon says. "A raw diet is the best thing to cure health ailments. It's so much better than a meat-laden diet. And meat farming is very toxic to our environment."
The strikingly beautiful actress will be appearing in The Confidant, Hollywont, and the exclusive SyFy thriller, Mongolian Death Worm with Sean Patrick Flanery.
When she's not making films, Jon finds the time to collaborate with three other people on Auradrone, a hybrid of electronica, dance music and alt post-modern rock that she calls her "brainchild and baby" and where she's putting her energies musically right now. Her live band played recently at a Saw VI film party at Bar Sinistre in Hollywood, and will be doing a show at Zanzibar in Santa Monica on November 1. And come holiday time, the once-upon-a-time midwestern farm girl will be in our state, in Naples, to visit her parents, who live there nowadays.
