On February 16 of this year, Charla Nash was called to the home of her employer and friend, Sandra Herold. Herold needed assistance getting her pet chimpanzee, Travis, back into her house. When Nash arrived and attempted to help, Travis viciously attacked her. Herold called the police who were forced to shoot and kill Travis upon their arrival. As for Nash, she was left savagely mauled. Travis ripped off her hands, her nose, eyelids, and lips. She has been in the hospital since the attack and today is the first time she is speaking out publicly about the attack. She chose to speak to none other than Oprah Winfrey.

Perhaps it is a blessing that Nash recalls nothing of the attack, nor does want to. As she tells Oprah, "I want to get healthy. I don't want to wake up with nightmares." Nash does her best to stay positive and doesn't ask about her injuries and tries not think about any of it. “And there’s no time for that anyways because I need to heal, you know, not look backwards," she says.

Nash now has a new mission in her life: To tell people that exotic animals should not be kept as pets. "I'd like to put across to people's minds that these exotic animals are very dangerous and they shouldn't be around," Nash stated. Travis had attacked her once before by pulling out a chunk of her hair, which Herold found amusing.

As for the future, Nash hopes to one day be eligible for a face and hand transplant. In the meantime, her teenage daughter visits her and the two talk about college. Nash goes for a daily walk, wearing a veil to keep others from seeing her face. Her family is suing Herold for $50 million.

The pictures of Nash will not be posted here, but if you're curious, check out the story on Oprah's website.

The 'Oprah' episode with Nash airs today and will all feature the Heroes of Fort Hood. Check your local listings for times.
