The first time I interviewed the great Manny Pacquiao, it was not so easy.  The communication barrier was indeed evident. Back in the day, his English was not so good.  Over time our interviews have become easier and easier, as the champ's English has improved with time.  When Manny Pacquiao would arrive in Los Angeles for his past training camps, for me to get an interview with him was not so difficult. Times have changed.

With victories over great champions like De La Hoya, Morales, Barrera, Hatton, and Marquez, Manny Pacquiao has reached a level of stardom that makes an ordinary Q&A a bit more difficult.  Manny and I have gotten to know each other over the years through interviews, and spending some time with him in Los Angeles at the Wild Card gym.  This doesn't mean that it is easy to get a 5 minute interview with him though.

Pacquiao is handed off from one event to the next, and it seems that it never stops.  From photo shoots, to television interviews, to radio interviews, to the Jimmy Kimmel show, it is a non stop show.  Recently however, I did get 5 minutes of the pound for pound king's time and got the interview.  Times have changed, it's just not so easy anymore.

Thankfully, with all of the fame and money, and wealth, Manny seems like the same person that I used to talk to back in the day.  The interviews are easier with his improved English, and believe me I do not take for granted getting those 5 minutes with him.  When I spoke to Manny yesterday, I had a voice in my mind that told me, " You are talking to the most famous fighter in the world, and by far the most famous person in the Philippines."

Yes times have changed, but with Pacquiao's fame an interview with him is that much more special.  This was evident to me when I was watching a recent episode of HBO's 24/7 and saw the president of the Philippines being quoted talking about Manny Pacquiao.

Chasing Pacquiao isn't an easy task anymore.  But when you catch him, it's worth the wait.
