700 Episcopalians who met at the Reston Hyatt (Virginia) agreed that the diocese needed to address "the pastoral needs of our faithful gay and lesbian members." Additionally the resolution refined the relationships as "characterized by fidelity, monogamy, mutual affection and respect, careful, honest communication and the holy love which enables those in such relationships to see in each other the image of God." When I read that part, I had to go back and re-read it to make sure I read it correctly!
The resolution concerned some of the delegates. One was concerned about opening Pandora's Box with regards to the church recognizing same sex unions.
You may remember that two years ago nearly a dozen Episcopal Churches parted ways with the Episcopal diocese of Virginia when the first openly gay man, Gene, Robinson was elevated to Bishop in New Hampshire.
These are difficult times for churches all across the country. These kind of decisions are occurring all to frequently within mainstream churches. Recently I have written about those who approve of sin. If the diocese of Virginia finalizes the resolution, then they become sinners themselves. For a church to approve of a sinful lifestyle (i.e. same sex unions) as described in Scripture, then I believe that that diocese will have committed blasphemy.
We are warned about this in Scripture.
