Old west ghosts in Tombstone Cemetery
The Tombstone Cemetery has been the resting place of former residents of the “town too tough to die” since 1884. Tombstone Arizona citizens felt the need of a new cemetery where “proper” residents could be buried having met a feeling of status. Soon small wooden crosses were over shadowed by large granite, bronze and marble carved monuments. James Lamb was the first interment on June 30, 1884.
This is not the Boot Hill Cemetery where Tombstone’s rowdy rogues and misfortune souls are buried under piles of stones. The Boot Hill Cemetery is full of history and visited by thousands of tourists each year.
The “new” Tombstone Cemetery, as it was called, is filled with ornately carved tombstones where visitors can read about the life of individuals who lived and loved in the once prosperous growing town. Many of Tombstones founding families are buried at the large hidden cemetery tucked away on the west end of Allen Street.
The cemetery is also known to be very haunted. One of most commonly reported phenomena at the Tombstone Cemetery are balls of light. Balls of light are commonly reported phenomena at some cemeteries. This mysterious phenomenon is also known as will-o-the-wisp, spook lights, ghost lights, corpse candles or orbs. Some leading theories believe the lights are the result of some kind of earthly geological phenomenon that creates the ghostly flames. Others believe the balls of light that dance across the cemetery are the lost spirits of the dead who are doomed to roam the earth for all eternity
A MVD Ghostchasers Workshop found the crew in Tombstone and we were quite anxious to pay a call to the cemetery at midnight. With only the moon to guide us, we walked the dark lanes of the graveyard with tombstones flanking each side. Part of the group ventured to the back side of the cemetery where they saw a shadow move swiftly from grave to grave. The group sensed perhaps they disturbed someone’s eternal sleep.
