About nine years ago, the MVD Ghostchasers team spotted an old hearse in a dealership back parking lot. Immediately, we decided how cool it would be to arrive at our haunted destinations and house calls via this beautiful 1972 Cadillac Superior Endloader hearse. We scraped our dollars and change together and purchase the hearse for $350. Yes, you heard that right! The hearse was in great condition and ran like a charm.

We quickly put it to use doing a media story about Tempe’s haunted Casey Moore’s Oyster House. We even had thoughts of putting it to work for us. We dreamed of doing our own haunted hearse tours or escorting bride grooms to the church on their wedding day.

One day I was at my neighborhood gas station filling my car’s tank when I spotted a hearse in the next lane. Its license plate read BODROD so I knew the owner had to be friendly. This was the day I met Derek Lewis and learned he lived just blocks away in my same neighborhood. We exchanged hearse tales and knew we would be in touch.

Derek drove his first hearse to Flagstaff when the MVD Ghostchasers held a workshop at haunted Hotel Monte Vista. We were astonished his hearse made it the 146 miles in one piece. A group of us piled into the old hearse and headed to the cemetery. Derek parked and we tried to photograph the ghosts and tombstones through the fence. Many of us have fond memories of riding through Flagstaff in the back of the hearse with the stereo blasting the theme from “Ghostbusters”.

Since then, Derek has started a very successful hearse club in the Phoenix area called Kaos’ Funeral Cars. The club mission states: It is not the goal of KFC to replace, to be better than or be in competition with any hearse club around the world. KFC is designed to aid the pro-car driver and inform the general public about pro-car use and history.

Our hearse, “Sabrina”, is a member of KFC. The hearses have traveled about the Phoenix area to haunted places, car shows, Halloween houses in the fall, and many charity events. Derek and the hearses have raised money for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and collected bottled water for the Phoenix Fire Department during the torrid hot months. Derek and KFC continue to do fundraisers for various organizations throughout the state.
