On Tuesday evening, after two and a half hours of public discussion, the Santa Monica City Council voted 6 to 1 in favor of a ban on cat de-clawing in that city, the Los Angeles Times reports. The proposed measure will have a second reading – expected to be on November 10 – before a final vote is taken. There will be no further public testimony at the final reading.
The ban, which would go into effect 30 days after the second and final reading, would prohibit de-clawing of a cat except when necessary for medical reasons. Any person in violation of the ordinance would be guilty of a misdemeanor and fined $500 or less or be imprisoned for six months, or both.
This week, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors City Operations and Neighborhood Services Committee approved the proposed legislation banning cat de-clawing in San Francisco introduced by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi. The full Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote Tuesday, November 3, on the ban.
