Actor Matt Damon is making a big splash in the world of charity this week with his announcement that he and his co-founder Gary White of Water.org are pledging $2 million to provide 50,000 people in Haiti with safe water and sanitation.
"The situation in Haiti is extreme - it's the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and nearly half of its people don't have access to clean water," said Water.org Co-Founder Gary White at the opening of the Clinton Global initiative Annual Meeting. "Expanding Water.org's programming to Haiti will help people break the cycle of disease and poverty."
A social media campaign called the Haiti Challenge has also been launched to help fundraise for the cause. The website contains plenty of opportunities for supporters to get involved, including everything from placing links on personal blogs to providing avenues for "in lieu of gifts" donations from supporters getting married.
As Water.org's website explains, "...[the] Haiti Commitment will reach beneficiaries with grant-drive programs while also exploring opportunities with micro-finance institutions..." In the case of reaching Haiti's poorest, donations from organizations like Water.org will provide smaller businesses already attempting to sponsor Haitians with the most need with the ability to finally get the assistance they so long to give.
Water.org has already been able to provide access to safe water and sanitation for communities in Africa, South Asia, and Central America, and is joining a growing community of organizations working to help the 60% of Haitians without access to clean drinking water.
