Front page of today's Los Angeles Times: Slaying Suspect Tied To Militias.

Reports of the shooting of Dr. George Tiller in his place of worship have the killer associated with "..anti-government militia groups". Ladies and gentlemen, the electorate needs now more than ever before to be able to sort out smear from fact.

The Times reports that shooter Scott Roeder had attended a demonstration two weeks ago and reports that Roeder had complained about abortion rights, and had quoted Old Testament chapter philosophy. There is only vague reference to hate groups, and no groups are named.

Militia Groups aren't anti-government or hate groups any more than enforcement of immigration laws is a hatred of new immigrants. Such allegations only mis-frame the issue and lie to the electorate. In the case of militias, the vast majority of individuals summon government to its duty and has no intention of applying anything but due process to the concept of self-rule. This is because tens of millions believe that it is being taken, and only the electorate has the moral and legal right to say. The part that everyone needs to understand is that – gun owner or not – you are the militia in this country. You are the sovereign in this country and government is your servant. Chances are, you're not a hater for that.

Nobody argues that hate groups don't exist, but when genuine objection and the reasonable expectation of due process are labeled as hate, we have one side misleading the electorate. Is your worry and distrust of officials hate? Is it anti-government to advocate self-rule and smaller government? Is it?

Militias in the United States are officially recognized by United States Code Title 10, Section 311, and associating murderers with such an officially recognized authority is nothing short of ugly defamation for political purposes. One of the most irritating things to the Administration is, I can guess, that the nation's unorganized militias by law do not answer to the Commander-in-chief. Independence in its purest form. This is unchanged for generations. Perhaps this irks officials, but we are a nation of laws and not of selective enforcement. Or are we? Gonna get mail on that, aren't I? [John at GoodForTheCountry.com. Please keep it pithy.]

The unorganized militia by law does not answer to the Commander-in-chief. Independence in its purest form.

Defaming militia and all patriotic thought, the electorate who are not under control of the Commander-in-chief, is such a tactic. But Militia, within the meaning of all legalese, is not always Military. there are tens of millions who do not come under the control of the Commander-in-chief, and tens of millions are beginning to sense otherwise. Hate?

Defamation as a political device — dividing the electorate — reveals a lack of professional integrity. it is not shrewd to do this, it is unpatriotic. Disarming the electorate of both weapons and spirit operates to the detriment of the nation.

So it is with defaming militia in the U.S. Since as long as I can remember – and I am sixty years old – gun owners have always admonished each other and new gun owners never to act in anger, and never to shoot another in anger. Gun owners new and experienced are taught to respond in purpose and not in anger. Police officers and layman alike are aware of the personal experience of having shot someone, even when it was most necessary, and most of us will do anything reasonable to avoid that.

For this reason – and many more — the shooter who kills for political purposes or in anger is not one of us. He or she is much more of the cadre of criminals, people who disregard both the law and conscience and have such an indifference to the losses of others. This is not the mentality of a militia, this is the mentality of someone who operates outside of due process.

Second Amendment ambassadors in America do not approve nor endorse shooting others to death for political purposes any more than automakers urge getaway cars for bank robbers. Gun owners are the greatest supporters of due process, and such liberty purists are disliked purely for summoning due process from our public servants. Hate group?

The public servants answer rational and legal insistence with defamation as their own brand of less-than-lethal harassment for political aims, and the belief that this harassment of the electorate does not kill is wrong; It kills Liberty, it kills self-rule and participation, and it kills Independence from our servants, disarming the electorate of both weapons and knowledge base. If the American Public comes to believe the lies of the tormenters, we can lose the United States the very same way other countries lose their Independence from their servants.

They are talked out of it.
