The 2009 H1N1 flu virus has caused mass concern around the country. This virus which has previously been shown to have affected humans, pigs, birds and ferrets has now crossed into our feline population.
The AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) and IDPH (Iowa Department of Public Health) have confirmed that a 13 year old, indoor house cat from Iowa tested positive for the 2009 H1N1 flu virus. The cat, which was presented to the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, is believed to have contracted the virus from family members suffering from flu-like illness prior to the cat’s diagnosis. Both the cat and family members have recovered from the illness but this case highlights the importance of washing hands and covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing. In this flu season, please monitor your pet’s health closely and if you notice signs of respiratory disease (coughing, sneezing, difficulty breathing, nasal discharge) contact your veterinarian.
