East County Magazine broke a story yesterday that is now starting to get Nationwide attention, and might have a significant effect on the upcoming San Diego County Sheriff's race in 2010, if not sooner.
It appears that Interim Sheriff Bill Gore has decided to deploy high-tech sonic Weapons, designed for military use, at local political gatherings. These are the same LRAD sonic weapons which are currently being deployed against pirates off of the coast of Somalia and against Taliban attackers in Afghanistan by the US Army.
For critics of Bill Gore, this news comes as no surprise. Gore has a history of heavy handed actions toward American citizens. In 1992 he was the FBI's agent in charge of the highly criticized Ruby Ridge incident; issuing "shoot on sight" orders to his snipers and other FBI SWAT Team operators. This resulted in the homicide of the families mother, who was holding her baby in her arms at the time the FBI snipers bullet stuck and killed her. The family's son and family dog were also killed. Gore later plead the fifth at the Senate subcommittee hearing, which heavily criticized the FBI for this incident. The FBI later fired and disciplined numerous members of Gore's FBI assault team, but as the senior agent in charge of the assault, Gore came out apparently unscathed.
When regional reporters asked the Sheriff's staff at the recent events regarding the weapon aspect of the devices, they downplayed the sonic weapon aspect of the LRAD, insisting that it was there to be used for it's hailing capability, if necessary. However, when Bill Gore was interviewed by East County Magazine's Editor Miriam Raftery, he stated that the hailing capability was not the primary purpose of the weapon's deployment...Doh! Considering the Magazine's photo of the LRAD weapon deployment, which appears to have a Sheriff's Search and Rescue member driving the weapon around on the back of a quad ATV, that would have been the perfect opportunity for Gore to assert the LRAD was being used as a Search and Rescue / Public address system; a use the local San Diego manufacturer ATC lists on their website for suggested deployments. Nowhere on ATC's website does it list "Tactical deployment against US Citizen's at political rallies".
Critics of this pre-staging deployment of sonic weapons at political events insist that they could have a chilling effect on free speech rights via intimidation. They could be construed as a modern equivalent to water cannon trucks and rows of riot troops. No doubt historical references to civil rights and labor protests will ensue. This isn't the first time the LRAD weapons have shown up at political events. The NYPD, also not known for the respect of citizen rights, deployed LRAD's an RNC event in New York.
Since the County Board of Supervisors directly appointed Bill Gore as Interim Sheriff last year, they are effectively directly responsible for his controversial actions... wait for that shoe to drop in the coming days.
I wonder if the Sheriff's department has any orders in for the new Thermal Heat Ray guns the US Army is now testing.... Those looked really cool on that high-tech weapons TV show!
