United States midfielder Sacha Kljestan scored his first three international goals for the senior team as the U.S. beat Sweden 3-2 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Kljestan, currently the target of transfer rumors that would have him suiting up for Celtic in Scotland, scored on a free kick, a penalty kick, and a first-touch shot that came just seconds after Sweden halved the lead in the second half.
Sweden pulled another goal back in the 89th minute, but the U.S. was able to ride out the late pressure for the win.
The lineup that head coach Bob Bradley trotted out gave some clues as to who the U.S. could call on for the World Cup qualifier. The central midfield pairing of Kljestan and Ricardo Clark could see time next month, depending on the status of Michael Bradley. And with injuries limiting Bradley's options on the outside, there's a chance that outside defenders Jonathan Bornstein and Marvell Wynne will figure as well.
But the United States, despite having more possession, did not threaten too often. The U.S. only finished with six shots in total, which is not the impression that front-runners Brian Ching (despite a beautiful feed to Kljestan for the midfielder's third goal) and Charlie Davies wanted to make.
