Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele had plenty to be happy about after Tuesday's elections, but there was still a bad taste in his mouth: Sarah Palin.
Steele was none too happy about the GOP losing a New York congressional seat that had been occupied by a Republican since the Civil War--and he blamed the loss on Palin's meddling. First she chewed up Republican candidate DeDe Scozzafava and spit her out of the race, then thanked her on Twitter:
I want to personally thank Republican Dede Scozzafava for acting so selflessly today in the NY District 23 race. Now it's time to cross the finish line with Doug Hoffman so that he can get to work for District 23 and the rest of America."
Aye, there's the rub. Hoffman didn't cross the line. He lost the race to a Democrat. New Yorkers apparently don't care much for Palin, her tactics, or her cronies. And Steele put it simply:
If you don't live in the district, you don't vote there, your opinion doesn't matter very much."
Conservatives are calling it a victory because they quashed the GOP establishment's candidate. Steele scoffed at that rationalization that it's a conservative victory to put a liberal in Congress:
“I don't see a victory in losing seats. I'm in the business of multiplication and addition. I want more Republicans. I don't buy that we somehow find victory in defeat.”
Apparently he didn't drink the conservative math Kool-Aid.
