Wearing a black veil that covered her face, Charla Nash, the 56-year-old woman who was savagely attacked by her employer’s pet chimp in February, today gave an exclusive interview to Oprah Winfrey on her afternoon show and then lifted her veil to show the shocking and horrific damage that she suffered.

The incident occurred when Nash tried to help her employer, Sandra Herold, get Herold’s aggravated 200-pound chimp, Travis,  back into the house. Herold, who speculated that Travis was being protective of her and did not recognize Nash because she was wearing a new hairstyle, tried to end the attack by stabbing her pet with a butcher knife. But the rampage didn’t end until officers arrived and shot and killed Travis as he tried to enter a police car.

Nash remembers nothing about the vicious attack that left her without hands, eyes or a mouth. And said she doesn’t want to remember. She did recall that Travis was always frightening to her and one time jumped on her back and pulled out a chunk of hair.

Despite the injuries she has suffered, Nash said she is not in pain and remains at the Cleveland Clinic. She hopes to one day get a face transplant and is optimistic that a hand transplant could be done at the same time. Meanwhile, she is focusing on getting healthy and returning to a more independent lifestyle, possibly in an assisted-living facility. She wears the veil, she said, so as not to scare people who might see her. Although it wasn’t discussed during the televised interview, Nash’s family is suing Herold for $50 million as a result of the attack.
