Online Vintage Clothing Shopping - Good, Bad or Nirvana?
I think we all know that “certain online auction” that can become so addicting; I mean instant gratification in buying at midnight anyone? (except for the waiting for the mail to arrive part which can be frustrating) but it is definitely a kick to see an item, click and buy it now. Notice I have no patience for actual bidding and waiting seven days either. If that is the case and there is not a buy it now? I move on most generally because some auction buyers bid at the last minute ---- 20 people try to snipe it and move in under your bid and win at midnight. And not only is it not instant gratification - it is no gratification at all!
90% of my online buying experiences have been very positive with Ebay and Etsy. I have learned to look at the history of the seller. How many times has the person auctioned? What is the feedback? Of course with paypal required – Ebay is the winner all the way around. But it is very easy and you can shop at your leisure. The more photos the better and always remember to ask questions – if the seller doesn’t want to answer them, beware. And I’ve developed a list of consistent great Ebay vintage clothing sellers that I go back to and check in to see what they have. Certain trusted sellers that I’ve learned are truthful after multiple purchases came through with shining stars. Etsy is rather the new web on the block
http://www.etsy.com/. It offers great purchases, prices listed and wide choices.
Online buying can be tricky but one of the best sellers I’ve met online is Carol at Dandelion Vintage (
http://www.dandelionvintage.com) - she is a Jersey Shore girl who lives and breathes vintage clothing and has great prices, honest descriptions. She is a great vintage dealer all the way around. Want a great starting point online where you can find established sellers? Try:
http://vintagebulletin.blogspot.com/, the site lists collectors, buyers and many sellers who have links to their own selling sites or their Ebay stores. It will boggle your mind. You can do this 24/7 – a great way to satisfy that need to search out and bring home.
I do have to say though? I still have a preference for that go to the store, look at it, touch it, think about it, go back and drool and then finally purchase. Right as I see it. So while I love shopping online? Caveat emptor - Let the buyer beware.
