Judy Garland died 40 years ago today, but she was a precious rarity who never really passes away.

Her most-famous movie remains “The Wizard of Oz” (1939) but she left behind a host of classic movies, including “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961), “A Star is Born” (1954) and “Meet Me in St. Louis” (1944).

She received the Academy Award’s Juvenile Award in 1939, an award category that no longer exists, the Academy’s Cecil B. DeMille Award (1962), three Grammy Awards and a Tony Award.

She is best known, of course, for her rendition of “Over the Rainbow.”

The clip below of Judy singing the song is a less-familiar but, perhaps, more relevant version for 2009. She was filmed singing “Over the Rainbow” for a radio program dedicated troops fighting in World War II and was designed to give our troops hope and a vision of better time ahead.
