Satellite images show Olde Stage Road Fire burn area larger than thought

New satellite images released by DigitalGlobe show the full
burn area of the Olde Stage Road Fire.

Thanks to recently released satellite images (see below), Boulder County now has a better handle on just how big the Olde Stage Road Fire really was.  Images from Longmont based DigitalGlobe show the fire burned 3,008 acres, nearly double what was previously estimated. 

On Friday, local fire crews as well as a 23 person crew from the Colorado Department of Corrections continued mop up operations on the fire.  Sheriff's department officials were keen to point out that while the fire is considered contained, it is not considered controlled.  There are still numerous hot spots that need to be extinguished and those will take some time to identify and put them all out completely. 

Damage estimates are still in flux however we now know one home was completely destroyed, not the two previously thought.  Several homes did sustain damage to decks, landscaping and fences.  Three outbuildings have also been confirmed lost in the blaze although that number is expected to increase as other sheds, barns, etc are tallied. 

Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks announced some trail closures due to the fire and the need to protect the areas that now are vulnerable.  Lefthand Trailhead, one mile east of Hwy 36 on Neva Road, and the following trails: Beech, Left Hand, North Rim, North Foothills and Hogback Ridge are closed until further notice.
