If you never heard of Nick Taylor, you should. He's our latest gift to the golf world.
Taylor, who is from Abbotsford, B.C., is a junior at the University of Washington. That means although he may be Canadian he's our guy. He's a U-Dub athlete and we should be as proud of him as Danielle Lauwrie, the school's extraordinary softball pitcher. She's also ours even though she's also from Canada.
Taylor is on his way to becoming as celebrated as Fred Couple's professional career or Ryan Moore's amateur career. You might remember in April at the Masters when Taylor finished the tournament as the top amateur.
Shortly after that, he was named the world's No. 1 amateur.
This week he won medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Then match play began and Taylor continued to dominate.
Today, Taylor goes for the championship in a 36-hole final against Brad Benjamin. (Taylor was upset by the sixth-seeded Benjamin)
Since he's only a junior, he will be a top contender for the NCAA championship - as will teh Husky team- next year. He also will be among top challengers to win the U.S. Amateur Championshp Aug. 23-29 at Chambers Bay, a course Taylor plays regularly.
Get to know him.
