Goodbye Anoop, Goodbye Megan. Out of a crop of superb performances in tonights final thirteen there just weren't many sub par vocals to choose from. Anoop Desai sang "Beat It" and Paula was completely right when she said that you simply cannot try to cover a song like that. Megan Joy Corkrey looked great and definitely has displayed the vocal chops in shows past but singing "Rockin Robin" was atrocious. Megan looked very uncomfortable on the big stage and her movements were uncoordinated and not very natural at all.
On to the good stuff! While I'm always applauding Lil Rounds each step of the way her performance of "The Way You Make Me Feel" was good but still out shined by many others tonight. Not that she'll have any problem whatsoever making it into the top five or three, that's a given when she cooks on slower songs.
Danny Gokey is one genuine humble cat. This guy is a phenomenal vocalists, easing into every genre with flair. Covering "PYT (Pretty Young Thing)" was brilliant. His vocal take was fresh, his movements while clumsy were all his own. Gokey did some cool crowd participation and put a Gokey spin on the cut.
Jasmine Murray was an infant the last time Michael Jackson had a legitimate hit so it only made sense that she would cover "I'll Be There," a cut that Mariah Carey redid in 1992. Looking cute and like a star, Murray sang the song beautifully. Kris Allen brought his guitar to the stage and really excelled on the vocals for "Do You Remember." The song was current and happening as Allen brought a Jason Mraz feel. I must agree with Simon when he said 'You shouldn't have brought the wife out so early." Female votes comprise 50% of the tallies. The look on Allen's wifes face could have killed Cowell on the spot. Allison Iraheta really brought the soul and the rock out tonight. She sang "Give it to Me" with flair and attitude. It's hard to believe that so much sass and bluesy swagger can come from a sixteen year old, top five for sure. Adam Lambert owns the stage. This guy could literally find himself in Chris Daughtry and David Cook categories. He is a breath of fresh air as the only male rocker in the top thirteen. Lambert sang "Black or White" and brought the roof down. His charisma, his style and the fact that he completely owns the stage on every performance easily makes him the top runner in the competition. In addition to rock sty lings Alexis Grace really brought it home tonight. Picking the perfect song with "Dirty Diana" Grace was a sexy little powerhouse with the looks and the vocals to do great things. The only surprise from the judges for me was their handling and comments to Jorge Nunez. Nunez sang the Jackson Five's "Never Can Say Goodbye." By all accounts and the crowd reaction he completely nailed it.l His rendition was smooth and sultry, giving the cut the star treatment. Unfortunately the judges, each and every one hated it.
Other perceptions from tonight was the opening segment. I hated the announcer bringing on the judges. It was even worse when he introduced Seacrest. It's a staple to have Ryan turn his head towards the camera and say, 'It's American Idol." Why mess with that signature line?
