Dolphins make a splash at the National Aquarium in Baltimore
Included in my gallery tour of the National Aquarium in Baltimore was a visit to the dolphin pavilion. Immersion tour participants had reserved seating for the dolphin show, “Play!” Maya and Spirit, two Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, were the stars of the show! The dolphins, along with their trainers, put on a performance that clearly demonstrates the intelligence and beauty of these marine mammals. While the acrobatic feats of the dolphins were showcased, the presentation was also used to teach visitors about marine mammals and the importance of conservation.
A visit to the dolphins is always exciting and over the past few years I have been happy to become more acquainted with them. This was a particularly exciting couple of years at the National Aquarium. A new addition, Foster, just celebrated his first birthday this past September. More recently, Chesapeake, an adult Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, gave birth to a new dolphin calf. Named Bayley, she is the tenth successful dolphin birth at the aquarium since 1990. She is growing well and her trainers report that she is active and playful. Bayley’s birth was captured on tape which you can view
here. Watch closely or you will miss the grand event!
Dolphin enthusiasts can have a more extensive marine mammal experience by participating in an Immersion event. Specifically, the aquarium offers a Breakfast with the Dolphins program as well as a new Dolphin Encounter.
