Jennifer Ferrato, a full-time student at California State Long Beach, recently rescued a 4-month-old dapple dachshund without a tail that no one else wanted only to discover it was a hermaphrodite. Her parents and friends encouraged Ferrato to give it back.

Ferrato named the darling doxie Marbles, I suspect because of its marble dapple coloring. Being a strong and positive person Jennifer refuses to euthanasia Marbles or give it back which will most likely seal the dog’s faith. Without the full support of her parents and after talking to three veterinarians who offered little support, Ferrato finally found a local vet tech and vet to correct Marbles’ problem.

Ferrato is working with Belmont Heights Animal Hospital and veterinarian Dr. Joel Rumm. Marbles has a penis with the sheath open leaving the tissue of a penis exposed. He will close the sheath of the puppy’s penis and tuck the exposed tissue back into the protection of the sheath. This will make sure Marbles doesn't get any infection from having the tissue of his penis exposed. Then Dr. Rumm will go into the puppy's abdomen to remove the testes and investigate if there are ovaries and a uterus.

As a full-time student Ferrato is on budget and is asking for our help. The surgery is estimated to be around $850. If anyone in the area or aboard is interested in helping Marbles and Ferrato, you are encouraged to send checks or money orders to the vet directly attention “Paul Blair.” Blair is the person in the office overseeing the collection of funds.

This is Ferrato’s first dog as an adult and despite the naysayers, she wants to give this dog the chance to live a full life that others are so quick to want to extinguish.

I have no personal relationship with Ferrato, our path simply crossed as active members of the dachshund community at large. Some people volunteer their time or services while other make donations. I’m extending a helping hand in the best way I can by getting the word out. Ferrato has been very transparent offering full disclosure about her and Marbles. I know in today’s cynical times one may worry this is another internet scam, but to best of my knowledge this is just a young woman and her dog who need a little help if anyone is in a position to do so.

All donations, no amount is too small, cards, general encouragement and positive thoughts are welcome.

Once Marbles’ surgery is complete, he is expected to live a very normal and happy dog’s life. Ferrato along with her friends are looking forward to spoiling the little guy.
