Urban Pets is Hollywood’s best pet supply store

Finding a quality local pet store can be exhausting. Big major chain stores are usually convenient, but the food selection and staff can be questionable. Independent stores are often better in my experience because the stores are started by individuals who have a deep rooted love for pets, their owners and the overall well being of the animals. Urban Pets in Hollywood is probably one of the best in the city.
For starters the store is huge; it is 5,000 square feet. Unfortunately the typical independently owned pet store is small with a good but limited selection. Most independents tend to be more of a boutique. Urban Pets shatters that paradigm with its large loft space and grand selection of all natural, holistic and raw food and pet supplies for dog, cat, bird, fish and reptile. Entering Urban Pets is more like visiting big department store than an independent pet store.
Urban Pets’ owners are Zack Grey and Karena Martin two very well known and respected trainers specializing in dog behavior and obedience. Rufus, my red smooth miniature dachshund, loves Zack, Karena and Mr. Moon, the store’s mascot and Zack’s dog, a mixed rescue. Zack and Karena are notable fixtures of the store and at least one of the two experts can be found there on any given day. Zack, Karena and their staff are always very helpful and knowledgeable. It is so refreshing to enter a pet store and encounter people who know and enjoy what they are talking about.

letely green from leashes and collars to the toys and beds made from recyclables. In addition to the eco-friendly items and premium food, Urban Pets is an active, contributing member of the animal community. It regularly host adoptions fairs, offers monthly vaccinations, micro chipping and teeth cleaning clinics, and other fun amenities like pet portraits and holiday parties. They even have basic and advance level training series available for interested dog owners. Rufus is a graduate of Zack’s Basic Training Level I class.
Urban Pets is also a favorite of many local celebrities and Zack and Karena’s client list includes Michael Eisner, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia DeRossi, among many more. I only mention the celebrities because they obviously have the means to shop anywhere and the fact that they choose Urban Pets says something. I must admit though Zack rarely recognizes the celebrities unless someone points them out; there is no airs of pretentiousness about Zack, Karena or Mr. Moon. They are all about the animals and offering the best products and services at very competitive prices to whomever. They even offer Urban Pets membership, much like a Ralph’s club card, which allows you daily discounts on food and retail items for a small annual fee of $20.
Rufus buys his Fromm dog food and all other natural and healthy treats from Urban Pets. It’s his store of choice and Zack and the gang always make him and I feel welcome. The store is more than a pet store, it’s a community hang out and resource for pet owners. Stop by and visit them today. Tell them Rufus and I said hi.
