It’s the digital age, the age where every move we make is virtually tracked through Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and more. We have cameras set up on nearly every corner, video clips are as easy to access as your cell phone, and yet somehow, animal cruelty still exists with over 5,000 cases being reported each month.
Now a person has managed to slice 14 cats down their spine. Another 20 cats were poisoned and dumped into a Phoenix canal. And at least another 24 cats have been reported burned and/or drowned with threatening notes left next to their mutilated bodies in central Phoenix.
Want to make a quick $7,500? Catch someone in the act of committing animal cruelty (any type of animal cruelty) and relay this information to the police. If it leads to an arrest, the Sheriff’s department will pay you $2,500 and another $5,000 can be earned from AHS and Silent Witness. All you need to do is provide information leading to the arrest of the person(s).
Whether you like cats or don’t doesn’t matter. Focus on these words:
Those who abuse animals are fully capable of abusing humans.
"Researchers as well as FBI and other law enforcement agencies nationwide have linked animal cruelty to domestic violence, child abuse, serial killings and to the recent rash of killings by school age children", says Dr. Randall Lockwood, vice president of training and initiatives for the Humane Society of the United States. A New Jersey study recently stated that 88% of those convicted of domestic abuse also had a history of being cruel to animals.
If you want to keep your family safe, you should be actively vigilant to the activities of neighbors as well as strangers. Keep your cell phone charged, upload that video application and begin watching for any unusual activities. If you care for a feral cat colony, erect cameras and post signs that the area(s) are under video surveillance. And if you catch someone committing a crime, or learn about an alleged animal abuser, turn the information into the police.
Animal cruelty is not only immoral, it’s illegal. And yes, feral cats are included in this protection.
