The rivalry between the Dawgs and the Gators may well be the most anticipated of the UGA season, but the Georgia-Auburn series, which began in 1892, is the oldest. Currently, Auburn leads the series, 53-51-8, although Georgia has won the last three times the teams met.
The Georgia Bulldogs (5-4, SEC 3-3) will face the Auburn Tigers (7-3, SEC 3-3) in Athens on Saturday. This week, Auburn squeeked back into the USA Today poll at #25, while the Bulldogs fell out weeks ago. But, the Tigers, coached by first-year coach Gene Chizik, have had many of the same woes as the Bulldogs, specifically being unpredictable and unreliable in their game. The Tigers started with a bang at 5-0, but suddenly hit a three-week skid v. Arkansas, Kentucky and LSU. They arrive between the hedges with a win v. Furman, 63-31.
The Dawgs will have to be at their best defensively, as Auburn is currently second in scoring offense—35.0 points per game. However, the Tiger defense is last in the SEC, allowing 26.6 points per game, hopefully giving the unstable, turnover-happy Dawgs a chance to build on their 38-0 defeat of Tennessee Tech. But, QB Joe Cox needs to watch out for Tiger senior cornerback Walter McFadden, who is currently tied at the top of the SEC for interceptions with four.
Fortunately, it appears sophomore A.J. Green will be back on the field for the Dawgs this Saturday, after sitting out v. Tennessee Tech to allow a bruised lung to heal. Green is leading the SEC in receiving per game (91.5) and receptions per game (5.5); he is second with 732 yards. The Dawgs have depended heavily on Green this season, and will no doubt do the same this weekend.
Georgia v. Auburn is scheduled to kick off on Saturday in Athens at 7:00 p.m. (EST). The game will be carried live on ESPN2.
