DIPLOMACY - Government agency IRNA wishes to interview the new US president…

As Iran and the United States attempt to a détente in their diplomatic relations (non-existent since the beginning of the 1980's), on Wednesday, the Iranian government news agency Irna advanced a request to interview the new US president, Barack Obama.

'Basically, we want to know the different outlook that we can expect from president Obama, as compared to the preceding administration', explained Maghsoud Amirian, bureau chief of Irna's New York office, when questioned by AFP.

'To sit down face to face'

Tuesday, at  the 30th anniversary of the Islamic revolution, Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, had declared that his country was ready for dialogue with the new American administration but only as equal partners and with mutual respect.

Same story from the White House where it's been said that there is hope to create “opportunities” in the coming months with the idea  “of sitting down at the table, face to face”.
