Beatle news briefs: McCartney turns to Atlanta
What we posted Wednesday:
The dust had barely settled on the announcement of the Boston shows when the Aug. 15 show in Atlanta was announced. The show is a benefit for Piedmont Park, AP reports. Presale begins 10 a.m. 6/25 through Ticketmaster.
Talking about another concert, the Halifax Regional Council has agreed to exempt upcoming concerts in the city by Paul McCartney and KISS from laws governing volume, reports MetroNews.ca. One councilman, Steve Streatch, said he didn't support the McCartney concert because of McCartney's protest a few years ago of the Atlantic Canadian seal hunt. Others on the council, however, were enthusiastic about it. (Thanks to Patti M.)
We'll be posting your stories about the Boston presale Thursday. Those of you involved in the Atlanta presale can email us at beatlesexaminer@gmail.com with your experience in the presale.
Jeff Slate alerted us that the Beatles remastered box sets are now listed on Amazon.co.uk, but not in the U.S. yet. The Beatles Remastered Stereo Boxset is priced at £134.59 (roughly $224.50 USD, according to the latest exchage rates), while The Beatles In Mono is priced at £157.99, roughly $260 USD. That's a bit better than what we found originally, though they're still a healthy chunk of money.
Graeme Thomson, the author of the recent indepth interview with Olivia Harrison, talks about the interview in a blog on the Herald site. (Thanks to HwyCDRRev.)
A Sgt. Pepper poster with the signatures of all four Beatles sold for $50,000 in New York, reports the BBC.
In her blog on MySpace Wednesday, Mary Hopkin announced the availability of her latest archival album, "Now and Then." It can be purchased through her website.
The latest edition of "Dennis Mitchell’s Breakfast With The Beatles,” now available at http://www.beatlesradioshow.com, will take a virtual trip to San Francisco in honor of the show's new affiliate, KYA. It will include rare audio from The Beatles’ visits to the City by the Bay, set to music from the setlist of their final concert at Candlestick Park in 1966. And the show has added another affiliate -- WMNG, St. Croix, Virgin Islands. The show will run Saturday mornings at 9 starting July 4.
Allan Kozinn of the New York Times has this a profile of classical pianist Aki Takahashi. What does this have to do with the Beatles? At the end of the story, Kozinn makes reference to "Hyper Beatles," a four-CD project she did in 1991. There was a U.S. version of her album here, but only one disc. It was one of the most unusual Beatle cover albums we ever heard, putting a very avant-garde accent on Beatle songs.
Backstage Auctions is putting 5,000 7-inch vinyl records (aka 45 RPMs) up for auction. Artists represented include The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, KISS, Fleetwood Mac and Journey. A portion of the auction proceeds will be earmarked for the American Diabetes Association. The auction runs through June 28.
Horror Happenings Examiner Charles F. Rosenay!!! (aka Cryptmaster Chiller Chuckie) has "A Terrorble Top 10 List of Fave Fright Films by McCartney." No, not that McCartney, but there is a link.
"Live 1968 Paris/Ottawa," a set of unreleased live recordings from two shows by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, will be bundled together with Hendrix memorabilia and be available beginning Aug. 11 exclusively on Amazon.com. The Ottawa performance includes a Hendrix version of the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band." The set will include both a CD and a colored vinyl album.
