Dave Dee Dozy Bicky Mick and Tich perform "The Legend of Xanadu" on "Top of the
Pops" in 1968 in this YouTube clip. Dave Dee died Thursday. George Harrison
mentioned Dave Dee in a song introduction on "Anthology 3."

  • In the introduction to "I Me Mine" on "Anthology 3," recorded on Jan. 3, 1970, George Harrison joked, "You all will have read that Dave Dee's no longer with us. But Micky and Tich and I would like to carry on the good work that's always gone on in No. 2." George was actually referring to John Lennon, who was on vacation. But sadly, Dave Dee of Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich died Thursday at age 67, reported the Telegraph.  DDBMT were bigger in the UK and Australia than they were here. Their '60s hits included "Bend It," "Zabadak" and "The Legend of Xanadu," which featured the sound of a whip cracking. Check out the 1968 TV performance of it from "Top of the Pops," above, introduced by legendary British disc jockey Sir Jimmy Savile, who was knighted by the Queen in 1990. How's about that, then? (One of Savile's trademark phrases.)
  • We finally found out what happened with the post-auction negotiations with the Lennon "Just Because" tape. Well, sort of. A representative from Bonhams and Butterfields told us Friday, "This matter has been handled and all parties are happy with outcome." Actual details of the settlement, though, are confidential. The recording was originally described on the auction site as "A John Lennon never-publicly-heard cassette recording, 1973." We notice that description has now been amended to say, "A John Lennon cassette recording being one of an unknown quantity that is believed to exist, 1973." Looks like someone, maybe the buyer, noticed it was all over YouTube and on bootlegs.
  • And here's another clue for you all: In the same Rolling Stone archive I linked to in the column on "Get Back"/"Let It Be" reading, there are more Beatle articles to recommend, though not tied specifically to the "Let It Be" sessions. "Beatles Record-Busting LP May Be All-Time Biggest" is a feature on the White Album before its release. And "One and One and One Is Three?" looks at the "Paul Is Dead" story, which was a story in itself. There are some additional articles on "Abbey Road," too, and some more recent articles. But it's the old ones that are the most fascinating.
  • Also, Crawdaddy!, a very thought provoking publication in those days, has the full archive of its first 19 issues online. They date from Feb. 1966 to Oct. 1968.
  • Crawdaddy also has a recent interview with photographer Bob Gruen, who took those great New York pictures of John Lennon.
  • For those in the New York area, Saturday (Jan. 10) is your last opportunity to see a free performance of "Victor Spinetti: A Very Private Diary." It's at 3 p.m. at the Bruno Walter Auditorium in the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, 111 Amsterdam Ave., New York City. Beatle fans know Spinetti's name well: He played Richard the nervous TV director in "A Hard Day's Night," the villainous Prof. Foot in "Help!" and the army sergeant who spoke gibberish in "Magical Mystery Tour." Spinetti will tell stories about his life and career.
  • For the few who care: Heather Mills showed up for an appearance on NBC's "Today" show today with a new 'do. She's trimmed her long hair short, reports the Daily Mail. You can see the "Today" interview here. Her website says she's hosting a healthy cook-a-thon Saturday in the Bronx to teach young chefs to prepare vegan meals.
