Beatle News Briefs 1/7/09 - McCartney to share his 'Amoeba's Secret' on CD
- Paul McCartney's "Amoeba Secret," the vinyl EP recording of his live show at Los Angeles' Amoeba Records on June 27, 2007, that's nominated for two Grammy Awards, is quietly coming out on CD Jan. 27, according to a listing at Amazon.com and other online retailers. That's just in time for the Grammy Awards show Feb. 8, likely the only reason this is coming to CD at all. The Grammy nominees from the disc are "That Was Me" for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance and "I Saw Her Standing There" for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance. Those two tracks comprise half of what was on the original vinyl EP release -- "Only Mama Knows" and "C Moon" were also on it. One listing we saw said the CD will contain just the four tracks of the vinyl, though two other tracks from the show, "House of Wax" and "Dance Tonight," were added to the vinyl and CD single releases, respectively, of "Ever Present Past" from the album "Memory Almost Full." Here's an idea: Why not release the whole show? I wonder how many people bought up the vinyl thinking that was the only way they'd be able to get these tracks. Indeed, we saw several listings still online for the vinyl EP that specifically said the tracks would never come out on CD or digitally. Never say never.
- And those feisty folks at NRK haven't given up. They stopped podcasting the Beatles, but now they're airing the McCartney Amoeba's Secret concert. And we're not talking the tracks on the EP, but the whole thing. (Thanks to Roger Stormo.)
- Also, Paul's website just added an official video for "222," one of the bonus tracks from "Memory Almost Full."
- Let's face it: The headlines about the NRK Norwegian Beatle podcasts were really much ado about not much of anything. But with all the attention the story got (and the misleading news accounts equating this to the eventual iTunes debut), doesn't this just point out how much the public is hungering for the catalog to go to iTunes? Paul McCartney's recent comments demonstrate that the Beatles are very aware of that. But words mean nothing, Paul. Action is what's important. I hate to use the line, but "get 'er done," for Pete's sake. By the way, NME.com, Rolling Stone.com and Billboard.biz either linked to us or mentioned the exclusive quote we obtained from Apple Corps. Just sayin' ...
- Speaking of iTunes, it shouldn't surprise anyone that there are websites -- not legal -- that already offer the Beatles catalog with both released and unreleased songs for a low fee. A reader told us about two in Russia and you know there are more. A quick Google scan shows Russian sites have been doing this for years and authorities haven't put a stop to it.
- A unique three-layer Iceland stamp featuring Yoko Ono's Imagine Peace Tower and a glow-in-the-dark photo of John Lennon was named the third most extraordinary stamp of 2008 by Stamp News. You can read more about it at Iceland Review.
- Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos told those at Billboard Digital Music Live, "A lot of our creative energy this year is focused on the Beatles project," and says because of it, the company won't release another version of Rock Band in 2009, reports the Washington Post. One wouldn't expect any less with a lucrative property like the Beatles. He also said the addition of keyboards to the Beatles game has been "considered."
- The Crawdaddy archives online, always a good place to look around, has a great interview with Pete Best by Jay Zimmer. The interview, done last year, was to promote Best's CD, "Hayman's Green." As usual, Best talks about how he's doing fine is and not bitter about being dropped by the Beatles. But Zimmer goes a little deeper into the sacking than most writers, and Best speaks candidly. “I think if you keep reflecting back on it all the time then you do end up being bitter. But there comes a time when I think, basically, you’ve just got to get on with life," he tells Zimmer. "And you suddenly realize that once you stop looking over your shoulder all the time and saying could be, should be, may have been, life leads different ways, and because of that, you look back on your life, and life’s been good to me.” You have to give Pete a ton of credit for this positive attitude. In fact, I think Pete should be a model for study. He's proof that you may be down now, but with the right attitude, you can come back. He certainly did.
