Beatles news briefs: McCartney raves on about Buddy Holly
- Paul McCartney talks about his appreciation for Buddy Holly in a blog on the UK Guardian. "His image was important, too. With Elvis, you thought, 'God, he's good looking.' With Buddy, it was like, 'God, he's the boy next door.' It was a particular bonus for John [Lennon], who had horn-rimmed glasses but whipped them off whenever girls came near. Now he wore them proudly."
- The latest issue of the British Beatles Fan Club Magazine, issue 31, has a cover story review of "Electric Arguments," but it also has a review of Pete Best's "Hayman's Green" and part one of a series about Brian Epstein by Rodger C. Meachem called "The Man Who Made the Beatles." For more information: http://www.britishbeatlesfanclub.co.uk.
- Author Philip Norman discusses his book "John Lennon: The Life" in a downloadable audio interview on the Guardian.
- The latest edition of "Dennis Mitchell's Breakfast With the Beatles" is available at http://www.beatlesradioshow.com. The program looks back at one half of the "Meet the Beatles" album with commentary by Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens.
- We've been reading through Gordon Thompson's "Please Please Me: Sixties British Pop, Inside Out." It's a study of the technical workings of British music in the era with, of course, plenty of sections discussing the Beatles. There are sections focusing on Norman "Hurricane" Smith, also Geoff Emerick and Lennon and McCartney.
- Speaking of '60s artists, Donovan, who's also discussed in the Gordon Thompson book, was honored Sunday with an Officer of Arts and Letters medal by the French government. ""I take it for all the work I've done over the years to bring poetry back to popular culture. To get an honour like this confirmed to me that it was successful, that my work was accepted on my terms, rather than becoming an entertainer," he was quoted by the BBC.
