Beatle news briefs: Thoughts on a busy day with Howard Stern, 'The View' and Yoko Ono
- It's been a busy day with the reports on Howard Stern and "The View" ... and we just got back from seeing Yoko Ono at Dinkelspiel Auditorium at Stanford University. We'll post more on this tomorrow, but for now we'll say it was an interesting night. Yoko, a little late in arriving, showed a group of films, several with John Lennon in them, and demonstrated her art and Onochord, then took a few questions from the audience. One very interesting thing was the film that used only the "Imagine" backing track. Stanford has the Wish Tree installation until Friday with two trees at Tressider Student Union and the Stanford Bookstore. Both trees had many wishes on them when we saw them.
- Paul definitely played it up for both sexes Wednesday. "The View" was for the ladies and Howard Stern was for the guys. "The View" hosts certainly played it to the hilt for its female viewers, even getting in a couple of innuedos in there about Paul's "instrument" (don't panic ... they were talking about his harmonica). You can watch "The View" episode directly at ABC's website. And you can hear the Stern interview in two parts on YouTube here and here.
- Actor Patrick McGoohan, star of the cult series "The Prisoner," and its predecessor, "Secret Agent" (also called "Danger Man"), has died at 80 after a short illness, reports the BBC. Yes, there is a Beatle connection: In the final episode of "The Prisoner" series, called "Fall Out," the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" is heard. And, as Peggy reminded us, the name of Dhani Harrison's band, thenewno2, comes from that show. "The Prisoner" was one of our two favorite shows all time (the other being Patrick MacNee's "The Avengers"). "The Prisoner" was a great '60s fable (or maybe it wasn't, depending on who you talked to) about a secret place where people who were former government operatives were spirited for information. McGoohan's character, Number 6, refused to cooperate and spent the entire series searching for who Number 1 was. The answer was revealed in the finale, but it still didn't make a lot of viewers happy. McGoohan later reprised the character in an episode of "The Simpsons." McGoohan's career also includes other TV shows, such as "Murder, She Wrote" and "Columbo," and the Disney TV drama, "Dr. Syn: The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh," that aired on Walt Disney's "Wonderful World of Color." "Dr. Syn" had some stiff competition on another network the night it premiered. That would be Feb. 9, 1964 .. the same night the Beatles debuted on "The Ed Sullivan Show."
- Yusef Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) has been recording George Harrison songs with Klaus Voorman for Voormann's first solo album, reports Undercover Music.
- Speaking of Klaus Voormann, Achim Schultz, who has been working with Voormann also, has posted clips of the two of them on his MySpace page. Schultz plans to attend the opening of the Beatlemania museum in Hamburg later in the month.
- The South African Music Rights Organization has hailed the decision by Norwegian broadcaster NRK to pull the podcasts of the Beatles catalog they had intended to broadcast. "SAMRO welcomes this decision to protect the Beatles' songs from unauthorised use, as it sets an important precedent in international copyright law,” said SAMRO CEO Nicholas Motsatse in a press release. “However, we wish to emphasise that SAMRO fully supports online music sales and legal music downloads – provided that they take place with the express permission, in the form of a licence, from the rights holders.”
- Paul McCartney.com posted what we told you last week that "Nothing Too Much Out of Sight" from "Electric Arguments" was used for the season finale of "Crash" on the cable channel Starz. The show stars Dennis Hopper.
- Former McCartney publicist Geoff Baker's blog "Diary of a Madman" is no more, at least for now. Baker told us he's killed it for personal reasons.
