Environmental activist Paul McCartney will be one of the speakers Dec. 3 at a hearing hosted by the European Parliament in Brussels that will discuss how eating less meat can help fight global warming, it was announced Wednesday.
McCartney and Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, will urge legislators and experts at the "Global Warming and Food Policy: Less Meat = Less Heat" hearing to focus on what people can do to fight climate change, including eating less meat.
The hearing will take place from from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in Parliament's plenary chamber and be chaired by Vice-President Edward McMillan-Scott. A press conference featuring the two speakers will follow. The hearing and press conference are expected to be streamed over the internet at this link.
The U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) produced a major report in 2006, "Livestock’s Long Shadow," in 2006 which demonstrated that meat production is much less efficient in the use of various inputs and very intensive in emissions of greenhouse gases and water use as compared to equivalent vegetarian food production.
Parliament will present its views to the heads of governments on climate change issues with respect to agriculture, food and development policies at a meeting in Copenhagen from Dec. 7-18, 2009.
