
Stella McCartney was one of 11 women named by Glamour magazine as Woman of the Year. The announcement was made Monday.
McCartney was honored for her pioneering clothing designs and her work as a vegetarian and animal activist.
Honored with McCartney were poet Dr. Maya Angelou, who was given a lifetime achievement award; pediatrician Dr. Jane Aronson of Worldwide Orphans Foundation; journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee who were held captive by North Korea and later released; Marissa Mayer of Google; the One Million Signatures Campaign that calls for an end to gender inequality in Iran; comedian Amy Poehler; Susan Rice, the first female African American U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations; singer Rihanna; California First Lady Maria Shriver and tennis star Serena Williams. A special recognition award was given to First Lady Michelle Obama for her work in mentoring young women.
McCartney was introduced by Beatle wives Yoko Ono Lennon, widow of John Lennon, Olivia Harrison, widow of George Harrison and Barbara Bach, wife of Ringo Starr.
