It's a real tribute to the incredible success of John Lennon and Paul McCartney that a TV show like "The Music of Lennon and McCartney," which was taped Nov. 1-2, 1965, was done at all. Ordinarily, one doesn't see shows like this until many years of success.
But here it was, 1965, a year after Beatlemania swept the world, that Granada TV in the UK worked up an hourlong special featuring several artists covering Lennon-McCartney songs -- plus a performance by the Beatles themselves.
The artists appearing included Cilla Black, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, the George Martin Orchestra, Henry Mancini, Esther Phillips, Peter Sellers and Lulu. Certainly a well-rounded bunch.
Lennon and McCartney -- as well as the Beatles -- had most definitely arrived.
