Antarctic cruise ship escapes ice
The Captain Khlebnikov icebreaker was nearing Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea yesterday, November 17th, when the ship became trapped by ice. The winds were just too light to move the ice pack as the ship attempted to plow through. Although the ship was trapped for a bit it was never in danger and when the winds picked up and the ice began to move again it broke free. It is expected that the ice delayed the ship’s return by possibly 3 to 4 days. Passengers were frustrated by the delay but expressed no fear. Contrary to some reports the ship was always floating with full engine capacity and not “stuck in the ice” but merely surrounded by it.
According to Russian news agencies, the ship is carrying a BBC filming company that is completing a documentary about the Antarctic as well as 51 tourists looking forward to a rare opportunity to view Emperor Penguins in their natural habitat. The ship’s full program of activities is being implemented and passengers took advantage of the delay by utilizing the two helicopters aboard to tour the surrounding area. The icebreaker has been doing Antarctic expedition cruises for several years. Officials stated, “The situation is typical for this time of year but the ship and passengers were not at risk”.
