Children with Disabilities Kicked off Plane!

July 8, 1:52 AM

Over the weekend, a family was kicked off of Southwest Airlines because their children were disorderly and loud.  The flight attendants asked the family two times to correct the disruptive behavior of the children.  Two of the children had disabilities.  One child is autistic and another has cerebral palsy.  The family was traveling to Washington State.  When the plane stopped in Arizona, police met the family at the gate and prevented them from reboarding their flight home.

The family consisted of a mother, her four children and a pregnant sister.   They did not have money for a hotel for the night.   Someone donated a hotel room at the motel six and the grandmother had to spend an additional $2000 dollars to buy return tickets.

I found this story horrific!  A mother traveling with two out of four of her children with disabilities is stressful enough. The mom admits that the children were loud and moving around.

Where is the compassion?  I have been on planes before children and prayed not to be seated next to a crying baby. I know the feeling that we all have when children behave as children while traveling.  Now that I am a parent of three who travels frequently, I appreciate the compassion of individuals who understand that children are unpredictable.   I wish as a parent that I could predict how my babies would respond to pressure on their ears or the bouncing of turbulence, but I can't.

A mother traveling with disabled children is already stressed.  The last thing she needs is more judgment, and less understanding.  What do you think?  Are parents responsible for every sound that their children make while traveling?  What has been your experience while traveling with children?  Weigh In.

Live fully,

Mia
