As a baseball mom, I spend a lot of time at games and tournaments. There is a lot of down time. So, what does a voyeur like me do? She watches. She observes. She evaluates. Not a pretty picture. Interestingly, smaller women don’t do a much better job than plus-size women in this area. I believe a woman’s goal should be to look casual, comfortable, pretty, appropriate and well-turned out. It would appear that this is easier said than done.

Let’s forget women who wear less than a size sixteen for the moment. If they can’t select terrific casual clothing, that’s their problem. The challenge for plus-size women is very different. The availability of attractive, appropriate, comfortable clothing for recreation is deplorable.

How can I say this when there is no shortage of plus-size casual clothing available to purchase? I say this because very few manufacturers “get it” and therefore there is very little opportunity to purchase separates that “fade and focus.” There appears to be little or no understanding of what larger women need to look great while pursuing recreational activities. Under this umbrella I would include warm weather sports, such as golf or tennis as well as attending warm weather sporting events, such as your child’s lacrosse game or a professional baseball game.

In mostly all other types of clothing designers and manufacturers are stepping up and producing a wide variety of attractive items for the larger woman to choose from. Not so in this area. Don’t they know we want to have fun too? An item being large, colorful and washable is not good enough! After all, we are not purchasing table cloths.

I’m going to give you the good news and the bad news. What to search for and buy as well as what to steer clear of and even be insulted by. Stay tuned.
