Under the Christian regime that was the Bush administration, people were tortured. Certain government officials denied that any torture took place. Then, as the issue of waterboarding came up, they said that waterboarding is not torture. And even now, it seems that many people downplay the brutality of waterboarding. An Associated Press report calls waterboarding a "simulated drowning technique." I don't know if the recently released Justice Department memos called it that or if the author of the report decided to call it that.
Honestly, do you think those who experienced it thought it was a simulation? Christopher Hitchens underwent waterboarding. He didn't think it was a simulation. It is drowning that just doesn't happen to end in death..
At the time that these instances of torture took place, this nation was about as Christian as it could get. These preachers of love and forgiveness and do unto others doled out torture like it had just gone on bargain basement sale at the local K-mart. Similarly, they let "God" roll off their tongues when referring to 9/11 every chance they got. And it didn't seem to matter that these actions were illegal. After all, the Christian president had God on his side, and we all know that human laws mean nothing next to God's laws.
Reportedly, "waterboarding was used on alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Muhammed 183 times in March 2003. Suspected al-Qaida logistics chief Abu Zubaydah was subjected to the treatment 83 times in August 2002." Never mind all the "sleep deprivation, isolation and physical violence."
Were these things done to extract information? Or were these things done to bully? "My God is bigger than your God!" As has been said time and again, torture does not work. But all that aside, it is a bit frightening to think what Christians will resort to, especially if they think God is on their side.... "One Nation Under God," right? It was one nation under tyrannical George, and I have news for you, he's not God.
