A nine year old Brazilian girl was pregnant with twins. Her pregnancy was discovered after her mother took her to the local hospital in Pernambuco after she complained of stomach pains. She had allegedly been sexually abused by her step father for the three years prior to her becoming pregnant.
It was decided that because the girl was raped and because her life was at risk because of the pregnancy, she would be allowed to have an abortion. According to Brazilian law, only one of those conditions has to be satisfied for an abortion to be permitted.
So, it happened that the girl had an abortion on Wednesday but not without the Catholic church trying to stop it. They failed.
In the aftermath of the tragic experience of the little girl, a spokesman for the church "says all those involved, including the child's mother and the doctors, are to be excommunicated." The little girl would not be excommunicated however, because of her age.
Apparently it doesn't matter to the church that the little girl was raped or that the pregnancy put her life at risk. The bottom line for the church and Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Jose Cardoso Sobrinho, according to a report, is "that the law of God [is] above any human law."
According to the report the "doctors at the hospital said they had to take account of the welfare of the girl, and that she was so small that her uterus did not have the ability to contain one child let alone two."
Although it is no surprise to people familiar with the church that the church opposes abortions for young rape victims, "it has attracted criticism from women's rights groups in Brazil."
The church is so interested in protecting the lives of the unborn, it seems they lose sight of the humanity that is staring them right in the face. What about the rights of this little girl to live?
I suppose it was God's will for that conception to take place. Therefore, it is not for man to undo it by abortion. And by this line of thinking, perhaps it was God's will for that poor little girl to be raped. And by God's hand that sick man was created and eventually placed in the presence of the little girl. And it was by God that that man was created in the image of God.
And now, the church wants to evoke God in this case... where was God when this girl was allegedly raped?
It is sickening that the church continues to place so much faith in their supposed loving mythical being that they would choose the unborn child over the living child. Where is the humanity in that?
How Christian of the Catholic church to turn its back on the girl's mother when she is most likely going through a horrible time right now herself. She is dealing with the fact that her husband, a man she most likely loved and trusted, allegedly not only sexually abused and impregnanted her nine year old daughter but he allegedly abused her older physically handicapped fourteen year old daughter as well.
