Roger Corman presents Splatter
Roger Corman presents Splatter

The hipsters over at Paste magazine have compiled a list of The 25 Best Horror Movies of All Time. Of course it's full of no-brainers (Halloween, The Exorcist) glaring omissions (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Tod Browning's Dracula) terrible picks (Friday the 13th, Poltergeist) and interesting calls (Paranormal Activity, Phantasm)...IFC has their own top 10 horror movies list too...  Roger Corman has teamed up with Netflix and director Joe Dante (Gremlins) for a three-part internet horror series called Splatter. It stars Corey Feldman and the first episode is now up and running... Speaking of internet streaming, Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate finally launched their upstart Epix HD website and premium cable channel this week by giving away free weekend passes. The debut programming features such movies as Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and specials like Madonna's Sticky & Sweet: Live from Buenos Aires concert film. Epix HD, created last year after Showtime tried to cut the licensing fees it paid the studios for their films, has a long way to go before they'll be able to compete with HBO, Showtime, Starz or even Netflix's streaming service. You can click here to get a free Epix invite code and see what it's all about for yourself... Weekend boffo: The executives at Sony are looking at the lackluster domestic box office returns for their posthumous Michael Jackson documentary and wondering This Is It? Meanwhile Paranormal Activity continues it's tear... Though so far it's one of those year's where it'll be tough to come up with even five truly great films, Variety's got an interesting story about the expansion of Best Picture nominees from five movies to ten at this year's Academy Awards. Seems like an attempt to include box office hits like Star Trek and The Dark Knight... Spike Jonze's short film, "We Were Once a Fairytale," starring Kanye West was leaked all across the internet this past week (story)... I finally got to watch Rob Zombie's "The Haunted World of El Superbeasto" the other day. The blend of Ralph Bakshi meets Chuck Jones by way of Seth McFarland was okay for a while but got old really, really fast. I liked the colorful, lowbrow R-rated animation and some of the voice work (especially Rosario Dawson) but found the rapid-fire pop culture stuff forced, unfunny and desperately pandering to the Family Guy crowd. Zombie's also way, way too self-referential, repeatedly stopping the movie to reference to his past films like 1,000 Corpses, Halloween and even his Grindhouse trailer. I'd give it 2-1/2 out of 4 stars... Glad to hear there's so much trouble on the Footloose remake set, it's a movie the world really doesn't need... Woody Allen's next movie has a title. It's You Will Meet a Tall, Dark Stranger and stars Naomi Watts and former Zorro co-stars Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins... Also announced this week was that Hopkins has signed on to play Odin in Kenneth Branagh's upcoming Marvel superhero movie Thor.
