Residents around the city and beyond took notice Thursday when the Boston Red Sox revealed their redesigned logo and uniforms. Seen here, Boston native Manny Delcarmen models the new alternate blue road uniform and "Hanging Sox" logo cap.
The new road uniform which the organization has dubbed "retro roadies," resembles the road grays worn in the 1980's, boasting a high-contrast blue "Boston" embroidered across the chest. The alternate road uniform is a blue jersey with a red "Boston" outlined in a high-contrast white. The alternate road jersey is shown at left.
The uniforms were unveiled Thursday at a special media event hosted by Game On! Fenway. Many players, executives, and friends of the club had something to say about the new jerseys. "The origin of this was Turn Back the Clock Day in June of '07 in San Diego," said Red Sox chief operating officer Mike Dee. "Everybody thought the gray was a bluer gray because of the blue lettering. The bordering makes the same gray look bluer. Basically, we've taken what was the red 'Boston' on the front and replaced that with a blue 'Boston.' If you look at the outerwear that we wear on the road, we've pretty much gone to blue as a road color and red as the home color," said Dee. "This is really an exact continuation of that." A fan highlight of the evening came when manager Terry Francona, former player Jim Rice, and former player (and current television announcer) Jerry Remy modeled the home alternate uniform for fans and media.
The biggest news of the even is likely the redesigned logo, and the choice of the "Hanging Sox" as the primary logo. Many fans will recognize the "Hanging Sox" logo as the reincarnation of a logo that has been used by the club since 1931. "Certainly the 'Hanging Sox' has an iconic value that transcends anything else in our assortment of brands and logos," Red Sox chief operating officer Mike Dee said of the new logo. "To have it be defined and standing alone is certainly the right thing to do." And it seems to follow the theme, as the new uniforms have quite an old school feel, employing the traditional Red Sox font for the text "Boston" on the road uniforms. The home uniforms still read "Red Sox" in the same font, not deviating from the home uniforms used last year.

While the primary club logo is the "Hanging Sox," the secondary logo is still the "Circle Sox" logo that we're used to seeing on apparel and souvenirs. However, even the "Circle Sox" design has gotten a facelift, changing the font of "Boston" to match the new uniforms, and removing a bit of the blue in the design, which leaves the logo looking a bit less contrasted than its last incarnation. The new logo is shown at left.
