Athens nightclubs are world-renowned for their live music, and the scene doesn't get any better than on Halloween, when bands and fans dress in wild costumes. Make a weekend out of the ultimate adults-only Halloween party!
Early-evening entertainment begins both Friday and Saturday at 5:30 at Terrapin Brewery (265 Newton Bridge Rd., www.terrapinbeer.com) with tours, tastings, and live music by Mac n Chz on Friday and OpEx on Saturday. Friday at the 40 Watt is also a must-see, with Dark Meat’s release party for the new CD, Truce Opium. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. Cover for each night: $6; $8 for ages 18 - 21. New on the scene for Halloween 2009, The Wild Rumpus Halloween Parade and Spectacle will take to the sidewalks of downtown at 10 p.m. The vision of The Wild Rumpus is to provide an organized avenue for the massive, “bubbling stew of artistic self-expression, costuming and gleeful abandon” which manifests with such awesome power every Halloween. In the style and spirit of events like Burning Man or The Oregon Country Fair, The Wild Rumpus will serve as a safe and highly visible outlet for these creativities. After circling downtown a few times, the event will culminate with a party at Tasty World Uptown. For more information, including meet-up location, key costume guidelines and key local ordinances to keep in mind, visit www.WildRumpus.org.
Local musician/writer Jeff Tobias has gathered a group of musicians/actors/sound effects geniuses for Halloween Live!, a multi-media performance. The classic film Halloween will be screened, on mute, with the soundtrack, voices, and sound foley being recreated live, as close to the original as possible. Location TBA; check www.Flagpole.com for details as they become available.
Go Bar (195 Prince Ave, www.myspace.com/gobar) presents Bodies, A Sex Pistols cover band featuring Winston Parker (Abandon The Earth Mission) as Johnny Rotten & Mike Mills (R.E.M.) as Sid Vicious, Brian Smith (The Gold Party) on guitar and Jim Payne (JuJu) on drums. Followed by a goth rock disco dance party.
Caledonia Lounge (256 W. Clayton St., www.Caledonialounge.com) features Girls Own Love (all-female Andrew W.K. cover band!) plus Hear You Me which is a Weezer cover band that only plays the band's earlier (and better) music--nothing post-Pinkerton.
For last-minute costuming, Junkman’s Daughter’s Brother is worth a visit all on its own. Located in downtown Athens at 458 E. Clayton St., this huge emporium of all things weird and wacky is known for cutting-edge costumes perfect for a night out in the clubs. For more information, call Junkman’s at 706-543-4454.
