Geisy Arruda is a Brazilian university student who was expelled for wearing a short, pink mini-dress to class. Arruda posed for photos in the dress on campus. On Sunday, the University took out a newspaper ad and publicly accused Geisy Arruda of immorality.
Bandeirante University is a private university outside Sao Paulo in Brazil. The university claims that Geisy Arruda, 20 disrespected "ethical principles, academic dignity and morality."
On October 22, Arruda made headlines when was escorted away by police after attempting to attend class wearing the short dress. In the video below she is wearing professor's white coat, and is seen being heckled as she leaves the campus.
According to the Associated Press, the advertisement titled Educational Responsibility in Sunday’s paper stated that Arruda was accused of attending class with "inadequate clothing" and having a provocative attitude that was "incompatible with the university environment." The university said it warned Arruda several times before deciding to expel her. They spoke to students, staff and Arruda before making their decision. The ad accuses Arruda of posing for pictures and provoking other students.
Arruda said that the university has not officially notified her that she was expelled, but the first she heard about it was when she read the ad in the newspaper. She said that she was told last week she would be allowed to return to class.
Many universities do have official codes that tell students how to dress. Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah (a Mormon private school) has an honor code that must be obeyed or students are suspended and expelled. Many students have been expelled from the school and it is usually heavily portrayed in the media when it happens.
